Today we took a stroll up Broad Street to enjoy a beautiful spring day and capture the seasonal splendor of City Hall. Courtesy of "City in Bloom" and volunteers from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and KPMG, City Hall has a fresh new appeal for the springtime. The construction that was in the courtyard is gone, the area around the trees was tidied up and the sakura were in full bloom this past week. As the time for cherry blossoms is almost past, you can see the green leaves peeking out between the flowers. |

Philadelphia’s trees continue to blossom on schedule as we near the 2008 Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival. On the first day of spring, we reported the appearance of the earliest cherry blossom varieties, such as okame, and are pleased to add that some of the later varieties have begun to bloom as well. Check along West River Drive and Martin Luther King Drive to view the pink blossoms of trees planted by the JASGP, some of which should now be nearing full bloom. With the white blossoms expected to spring up during next week, this year’s trees are right on schedule to enrich the splendor and spirit of the 2008 Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival of Greater Philadelphia. Be sure to check our events schedule and mark your calendar! |

Building up to the 2008 Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival of Greater Philadelphia, the Press Event that took place yesterday (3/26) was a great success. Representatives of Subaru, Fairmount Park, the City of Philadelphia, and the JASGP spoke about the festival in between taiko drumming performances, and Mayor Nutter made an appearance in traditional Japanese attire to read the proclamation from the city and to try his hand at taiko drumming. The press turnout was spectacular, with coverage from ABC, CNN, FOX, NBC, and CBS among many other networks in radio and print.

We're pleased to announce today, the first day of spring, that some varieties of Philadelphia's cherry trees have begun to blossom! Reports are coming in from various spots in the city where some of the earlier blooming varieties, such as okame, have been sighted in bloom. This marks the beginning of the yearly process by which Philadelphia is beautified with flowering trees that have been a part of the city for decades. Join us in celebration of spring time as we prepare for this year's festival! |

The Japan America Society is hard at work putting together the Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival, but we can’t do it alone. Every year volunteers lend a hand and the Festival wouldn’t be possible without them. Volunteering is a great way to meet people and participate in the Japan America Society community. Volunteer activities include helping out at events, flyering, etc. If you are interested in getting involved, please contact Sam Malissa at
