About the Festival

Welcome to the world of the cherry blossoms (sakura). Few things in nature can equal their delicate beauty. Come celebrate it with us! For two exciting weeks, all of Philadelphia is in full bloom for Sakura Matsuri - the Cherry Blossom Festival.

The Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival of Greater Philadelphia, or Sakura Matsuri as it is known in Japanese, is an initiative to encourage a better understanding of the cultural, social, and educational customs of Japan and the United States. Japan has been celebrating the beauty of the elegant pink cherry blossom for hundreds of years with picnics under the trees accompanied by traditional music and dance. The Festival also seeks to beautify the Philadelphia landscape by annually planting and maintaining 100 cherry trees in Fairmount Park. In the spring of 2007, the JASGP finished planting 1,000 cherry trees to supplement the 1,600 flowering trees donated by Japanese government as a gesture of friendship in 1926.

The 2009 Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival will take place from March 25 to April 7-- be part of a centuries-old tradition as we bring together the best in Japanese art, cuisine, dance, fashion, flowers, music and much more.

アメリカ建国の地であるフィラデルフィアでも、毎春桜まつりが開催されているのをご存じですか？　

1926年に日本政府がフィラデルフィアに寄付した桜のまわりに、今では1000本余りの桜の木が植樹され、ピンク色の空の下で人々は日本の春を楽しんでいます。

3月25日から4月7日までの２週間、フィラデルフィア市内のあちこちで日本の文化が紹介されます。この機会にあなたも日本の春を体験しませんか?
